Depth of Field for Real Estate Photography

Real estate is the opposite of portraits: you want everything sharp from the countertop to the back window. Good news — it's a solved math problem, and the answer is usually f/8.

The f/8 rule, with math

A 16 mm lens on full frame at f/8 has a hyperfocal distance of about 1.1 m — focus at 1.1 m and everything from 0.55 m to infinity is sharp. That covers an entire room. On APS-C, a 10–12 mm lens at f/8 is similar (~0.7–0.9 m hyperfocal). Get exact values in the hyperfocal calculator or the chart.

That's why f/8 is the real-estate default: f/5.6 risks a soft near edge, and f/11–f/16 buys almost nothing (the near limit barely moves) while adding diffraction. f/8 is the diffraction-free sweet spot with more than enough DoF.

Where to focus

The classic method: focus ⅓ into the room (not the back wall, not the floor). At hyperfocal it doesn't matter — focus at H and everything from H/2 to infinity is sharp. Practical workflow:

  1. Compose the room, set f/8, focus on a point about ⅓ of the way into the frame (a chair arm, the middle of a counter).
  2. If your lens has no distance scale (most mirrorless), focus-peak on something at the ⅓ point or use the hyperfocal number with the focus ring's readout.
  3. For large rooms or angled shots where the nearest element is closer than H/2, focus on the nearest element and stop to f/11 if needed — or take two focus-bracketed shots.

Why does my real estate shot look sharp in the middle but soft at the edges?

Lens field curvature or corner softness, not DoF — wide lenses are softest at the edges wide open. Stop to f/8–f/11 (where the lens is sharpest) and check if the corners recover; if not, it's lens quality, and no aperture change fixes it.

Should I shoot f/11 to be safe?

Only if the nearest element is inside H/2. On full frame with a 16 mm lens that means closer than ~0.55 m — rare in a composed room shot. f/11's diffraction starts to soften overall detail for zero practical DoF gain. Use f/8 and a correct focus point.

Does a tilt-shift lens change the DoF math?

Yes — tilt changes the plane of focus, so a tilted lens can have a "wedge" of sharpness covering a floor-to-ceiling scene at f/5.6 where a regular lens would need f/8+. The hyperfocal numbers here apply to regular (non-tilted) lenses.
