Depth of Field for Landscape Photography

Landscape is the one genre where you usually want maximum depth of field. Here's the math that gets you there without guessing.

The classic answer: hyperfocal focusing

Focus at the hyperfocal distance and everything from half of it to infinity is acceptably sharp. For a 24 mm lens at f/8 on full frame (CoC 0.029 mm):

Stop down to f/11 and the hyperfocal distance drops to 1.84 m (sharp from 0.92 m). On APS-C the same lens at f/8 gives a hyperfocal distance of ~1.7 m β€” even easier. The f-stop sweet spot

Stopping down increases depth of field, but diffraction softens detail. The practical sweet spot:

If f/8 on your format doesn't give enough depth of field, don't chase f/22 β€” use focus stacking instead (below).

When hyperfocal isn't enough

Two situations break the hyperfocal approach:

Practical workflow

  1. Compose, then pick your aperture: f/8 on full frame, f/5.6–f/8 on APS-C.
  2. Look up the hyperfocal distance (chart or calculator) and set manual focus there.
  3. If a foreground element sits closer than half the hyperfocal distance, decide: foreground-focused shot, or a focus stack.
  4. Shoot, then check at 100%: if the nearest element is soft, focus nearer and reshoot β€” better than "fixing in post".

Should I focus at infinity instead of hyperfocal?

Only if the scene is entirely distant (mountains across a valley). Focusing at infinity wastes the depth of field in front of you β€” hyperfocal gives you sharp foregrounds for free.

Is the hyperfocal distance accurate on modern lenses?

Most mirrorless lenses no longer print a distance scale, so set focus by looking at the lens-distance readout, using focus peaking, or by focusing on an object at the computed distance. The math is exact; your focus mechanism is the variable.

Do I need a tripod for hyperfocal landscape shots?

For maximum sharpness, yes β€” it lets you use the sweet-spot aperture without raising ISO, and it's essential for focus stacking. A tripod plus 2-second timer (or remote) removes mirror/camera-shake variables entirely.
