Low Light Photography โ Noise vs Blur
Every low-light shot is a trade: raise ISO and get noise, slow the shutter and get blur, open the aperture and lose depth of field. Here's how to pick the least-bad option โ with the numbers.
How dark is "low light"? (EV reality check)
Exposure value (EV100) is the shorthand. The exposure calculator computes it; here's the map:

The decision order
- Is the camera still? Tripod โ use base ISO and whatever shutter/aperture you like; noise becomes irrelevant. This is the single biggest low-light upgrade, and it's free.
- Handheld? Set the slowest safe shutter first (1/focal length, or 2โ4 stops slower with stabilization โ see the shutter speed chart). Blur from camera shake is unrecoverable; noise is at least manageable.
- Open the aperture as far as your depth of field allows (f/1.8 portrait vs f/5.6 group shot โ the DoF calculator shows the cost).
- Then raise ISO last, until the meter is happy. Modern full-frame bodies are clean to 6400; APS-C to ~3200; phones fake it with multi-frame stacking.
ISO: the honest guide
- Base ISO (100โ200): always when on a tripod.
- ISO 800โ1600: invisible on most cameras. Free light for handheld shots.
- ISO 3200โ6400: fine for full frame and good APS-C; noise is visible but printable. Better than a blurry ISO 400 shot.
- ISO 12800+: emergency only โ or embrace the grain; monochrome conversion hides it beautifully.

Is high ISO noise or underexposure noise?
Both. Noise is mostly set by how little light the sensor captures (underexposure), then amplified by ISO. "Expose to the right" โ brighten the exposure in camera (via ISO or shutter) to keep signal high, then recover in post. Noise reduction software works best on properly exposed frames.
Does image stabilization help moving subjects?
No โ IBIS/lens IS only cancels your shake, not subject motion. A person walking needs 1/60โ1/125 regardless of stabilization. Stabilization buys handheld capability for static subjects (buildings, night streets).
Why does my phone take better night shots than my camera?
Phones stack many short exposures (computational photography) to cancel noise, then sharpen with AI. Your camera can do the same: bracket 5โ10 shots on a tripod and average them in post โ the "poor man's astro" technique that works for night cityscapes too.
