Focal Length Explained
Angles of view for 14–200 mm, what wide/normal/telephoto each do, and why perspective comes from where you stand — not your lens.
Focal length is the distance in millimetres between the lens's optical center and the sensor when focused at infinity. It sets one thing: angle of view. Short focal lengths show a wide scene; long ones magnify a narrow slice. Everything else about lens choice follows from that.

What each focal length is for
- Ultra-wide (14–24 mm): space, drama, context. Great for real estate and astro, but easy to make empty scenes look empty.
- Wide (24–35 mm): the travel/street range. Fits more story in frame while keeping a natural look.
- Normal (50 mm): what your eye roughly sees. Unflattering to features up close, flattering at distance — the classic all-rounder.
- Short tele (85–135 mm): the portrait range. Compresses features, flatters faces, and backgrounds blur beautifully.
- Tele (135 mm+): reach and isolation for wildlife, sports, and candid shots.
The perspective myth
A wide lens doesn't "exaggerate" and a telephoto doesn't "compress" — distance does both. Photograph a face at 24 mm from 30 cm and at 135 mm from 3 m, then crop the wide shot to match the telephoto: the perspective is identical. Lenses only change what fits in the frame; where you stand changes the picture.
